ACLM Leader / Member Code of Conduct

American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) members are committed to observing and promoting the highest standards of ethical conduct, as set forth below. ACLM members pledge to accept this code as a minimum guideline for ethical conduct and shall:

Accountability

  • Faithfully abide by the articles of incorporation, bylaws, and policies of the organization.
  • Exercise reasonable care, good faith, and due diligence in governing and managing affairs.
  • Fully disclose, at the earliest opportunity, information that may result in a perceived or actual conflict of interest.

Professional Excellence – Integrity

  • Maintain a professional level of courtesy, respect, and objectivity in all matters and activities.
  • Strive to uphold and assist other members of ACLM in upholding the highest standards of conduct.

Confidential Information

  • Respect the confidentiality of sensitive information.

Collaboration and Cooperation

  • Respect the diversity of opinions as expressed or acted upon by the organization board, committees, task forces, member interest groups and membership, and formally register dissent as appropriate that, when warranted, may lead to disciplinary action. Promote collaboration, cooperation, and partnership among association members.

ACLM was founded upon and operates on the values of respect, integrity and trust for all whom we serve.

We are guided by our core values and our vision of lifestyle medicine being the foundation of health and all health care as a service to ALL people.

We treat everyone with respect, committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all who are touched by our organization, including, although not limited to, through employment, membership, elected leadership, appointed leadership, volunteer service, strategic partnership, or by engagement with ACLM as a subcontractor, vendor, or client. 

In regard to any and all activities of operation, we do not exclude people or treat them differently because of race, color, religion, gender, gender expression, age, national origin, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status. These activities include, but are not limited to, membership application, hiring and firing of staff, nomination and election of leadership, selection of volunteers and vendors, and provision of services.

ACLM Ethics Statement

Members of ACLM are rooted in the evidence-based science that supports the efficacy of the field and are committed to the highest of ethical standards, agreeing that:

  1. Members shall review the Physician Competencies for Prescribing Lifestyle Medicine document as a foundation for membership.
  2. Members shall seek to develop and maintain core competencies in lifestyle medicine to a high level of professional qualification through continuous education acknowledging lifestyle medicine as an evolving field of expertise.
  3. Members shall practice and promote evidence-based Lifestyle Medicine and shall not claim results or outcomes unsupported by documented, verifiable evidence. When members have personal bias regarding best treatments, they shall nevertheless share alternative perspectives and treatment options with patients.
  4. Members shall comply with all applicable laws and regulations governing their individual scope of practice.
  5. Members shall act fairly, in good faith, honestly, and with respect to patients and other healthcare professionals.
  6. Members shall uphold the standards of professionalism and report to appropriate regulatory entities fellow members whose competence or professional activity could adversely affect the welfare of patients or misrepresent ACLM.
  7. Members involved in research shall behave ethically towards human subjects as outlined by their organization’s IRB or other appropriate institution and shall represent their findings with complete honesty.
  8. Members shall not prescribe or recommend products or services from which they profit without full and complete disclosure of their financial gain.
  9. Adherence to the Code of Conduct and that which is outlined herein is a condition of ACLM membership and members may be counseled or suspended based upon violation.

 

ACLM Membership Refund Policy

The purchase of an ACLM membership for new and existing members is generally non-refundable. The policy also applies to memberships purchased before a new member promotion for waived new member fees. Exceptions may be made for the following:

  • Members dissatisfied with their membership may contact ACLM to request a refund if the refund is requested within 5 calendar days of renewing or activating their membership. ACLM will review member benefits utilized and determine if a refund will be granted. New membership or membership reactivation comes with a non-refundable $25.00 administration fee. 
  • If, on the rare exception, future year’s due payments have been paid upfront, any future year’s dues payments that have been paid are not eligible for a refund and are not considered under the membership dues refund policy.
