Description
A gaping void exists across the medical education continuum with regards to Lifestyle Medicine training. Extraordinary strategies are being developed and implemented across organizations to provide Lifestyle Medicine education to improve physician competency in the prevention, treatment and reversal of chronic disease. Highlights of these strategies across organizations in undergraduate medical education, resident and fellowship graduate medical education, and continuing medical education will be presented. In addition, standards for Lifestyle Medicine integration into medical school curriculum across the continuum will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the gaping void in Lifestyles Medicine training across the medical education continuum, and provide examples of Lifestyle Medicine training strategies, as well as lessons learned, occurring in organizations, medical schools, resident and fellowship graduate medical education and continuing medical education.
  • Describe efforts trainees, faculty and administration, health care providers, and organizations can do to strengthen efforts within their systems and organizations to improve Lifestyle Medicine training.
  • Describe the ACLM standards for Lifestyle Medicine implementation across the medical education curriculum and how these standards may assure quality of LM knowledge and skills for physicians, reduce barriers to implementation, and increase value of LM training across the U.S.

Brenda Rea, MD, DrPH, PT, RD, FACLM, DipABLM – Program Director, Family and Preventive Medicine Residency and Lifestyle Medicine Fellowship, Loma Linda University Health

Brenda Rea, MD, DrPH, PT, RD, is the Program Director of the Loma Linda University Health Education Consortium (LLUHEC) Family and Preventive Medicine Residency Program and Lifestyle Medicine Fellowship. She completed her educational pursuits as well as Family and Preventive Medicine Residency at Loma Linda University. She has consistently pursued professional training and experiences to develop knowledge, skills and abilities in relation to lifestyle medicine. Dr. Rea is a founding member of American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) and currently serves as Co-Chair of the ACLM Education Committee and Executive Director of the Lifesytle Medicine Residency Curriculum. In addition, she serves on the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine (ABLM) and is a Trustee for the Ardmore Institute of Health. Lastly, Dr. Rea has a wealth of experience mentoring students and residents in many areas of Lifestyle Medicine and is passionate about training a new generation of physicians to use lifestyle medicine to treat the root causes of disease.

Presenter:? Jennifer L. Trilk, PhD, FACSM, DipACLM – Associate Professor, University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville

Jennifer Trilk, PhD, FACSM is an Associate Professor at University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville. She directs the Lifestyle Medicine Core Curriculum and Culinary Medicine M1-M4 Elective, and is lead faculty for the school's Lifestyle Medicine Student Interest Group. Dr. Trilk and her medical school colleagues provide over 80 hours of Lifestyle Medicine training to students across the four years of the undergraduate medical curriculum. Dr. Trilk co-founded the Lifestyle Medicine Education Collaborative (LMEd), which provides leadership and guidance to U.S. medical schools. In 2019, LMEd was awarded the U.S. President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition Community Leadership Award, Dr. Trilk's second PCFSN award. She founded and directs Exercise is Medicine Greenville®, a comprehensive 12-week medically-based exercise and lifestyle program for adults with chronic health conditions, for which she received the Exercise is Medicine Global Leadership Award in 2019 from the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Trilk has received national recognition by the Association of American Medical Colleges, U.S. News and World Report, Chicago Tribune, CNN, among others, and she has been showcased internationally in 2017 as an invited adjunct professor at the Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale (UPO) medical school in Novara, Italy, and as guest lecturer for the Physician's Association for Nutrition International in 2020. In 2017, Dr. Trilk presented Lifestyle Medicine at a congressional briefing on Capitol Hill, in 2014 was awarded the U.S. President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition Community Leadership Award, and in 2013 was an invited speaker for Bipartisan Policy Center: “Teaching Nutrition and Physical Activity in Medical School: Training Doctors for Prevention- Oriented Care.” Dr. Trilk is a Fellow of the third class of the Aspen Global Leadership Network's Health Innovators Fellowship Program and is also a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine.
