Description
Building a culture of lifestyle in hospitals means delivering messaging and content throughout the administration, employees, patients, and even in the surrounding community. In this presentation, Lifestyle Medicine in the Hospital Workplace, you will hear from 3 champions from across the US on how they transformed hospital employee and patient health in their respective institutions. You will learn how they navigated beyond obstacles in their administration or respective departments to deliver Food as Medicine to employees and patients. You will gain insight and practical tools to build a roadmap for success at your own institution.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss why lifestyle messaging and content must be delivered throughout various levels of a hospital system to build a sustainable culture of lifestyle. 
  • Identify strategies that have been used to navigate obstacles at different institutions and understand which strategies to leverage within your own institution.

Speakers
Cate Collings, MD, FACC, MS, DipABLM – Medical Director, Lifestyle Medicine, El Camino Medical Associates, Silicon Valley Medical Development 

Dr. Collings is board certified in both Cardiology and Lifestyle Medicine.  She is currently director of Lifestyle Medicine at Silicon Valley Medical Development and medical director of Cardiopulmonary Wellness at El Camino Health in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Dr. Collings also is president-elect of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, which is a medical professional society recognizing that just as lifestyle is the primary driver of our chronic disease epidemic, providing evidence-based lifestyle solutions is the most effective way to achieve high quality and value-based care.  Dr. Collings has over 30 years of clinical experience in Cardiology, Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, and Lifestyle Medicine and is an ardent patient advocate In her capacity as Director of Lifestyle Medicine for Silicon Valley Medical Development, she is building Lifestyle Medicine into the fabric of a new primary care model as a means of further focusing on the quadruple aim in her medical community and the broader Bay Area.  She believes the use of teaching kitchens, selective use of digital technologies, and approaching clinical encounters through a coaching mindset are key elements to successfully transition patients to a healthy lifestyle. In service to ACLM, Dr. Collings has chaired the Education Committee, bringing education to practicing physicians and into medical, residency, and fellowship curriculum, and co-authored ACLM Standards.  She also has participated in the Lifestyle Medicine in Health Systems Task Force, among other roles.

Monica Aggarwal, MD, FACC – Director of Integrative Cardiology and Prevention, University of Florida 

Monica Aggarwal, MD, is a Clinical Associate Professor of medicine in the University of Florida Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. She received her medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and subsequently went on to complete a residency in internal medicine at Tufts-New England Medical Center. She then completed a cardiology fellowship at the University of Maryland. Dr. Aggarwal’s own path to understanding the impact of nutrition in illness started soon after the birth of her third child, when she developed an advanced form of rheumatoid arthritis. She was placed on medications that gave her severe side effects. It was only through learning about the microbiome (gut), its impact on the immune system and the role of nutrition in affecting the gut, was she able to truly heal. Serving as the Director of Integrative Cardiology and Prevention at the University of Florida, Dr. Aggarwal focuses on promoting food as the foundation of healing and for its medicinal value. In her clinic, she emphasizes plant-based nutrition and often performs multiple mind-body techniques with her patients, including yoga and meditation. She is also the Director of Medical Education for Cardiology, where she directs education for medical residents and cardiology fellows, with a focus on prevention, nutrition and lifestyle. In the hospital, she has multiple initiatives including developing a 100% plant-based menu for cardiac and vascular patients. Dr. Aggarwal is the author of the book “Finding Balance: Empower Yourself with Tools to Combat Stress and Illness,” which outlines 10 prescriptions to help guide people to better health. She has instituted a new plant-based menu at the University of Florida/Shands Hospital which is receiving national attention. She was recently named Florida’s Cardiovascular Researcher of the year which provided her with a grant to conduct the important research needed on nutrition. 

Marcy Madrid, MBA – Vice President, Community Health, Midland Health 

Marcy Madrid is the Vice President of Planning and Marketing for Midland Health, a system of healthcare partners in Midland Texas, including Midland Memorial Hospital. In her current role, Marcy oversees strategic planning, community health outreach, marketing and public relations, sales as well as employee engagement and patient experience. Led by the overwhelming research and evidence supporting plant based nutrition in healthcare, Marcy has spearheaded a community garden project, launched the first ever Food Is Medicine health conference in West Texas and collaborated with the city government, school district and a local community college to increase health literacy through a variety of cross-city community outreach activities and events. Marcy and other members of the Midland Health executive team are currently embarking on a holistic approach to their traditional healthcare delivery model incorporating plant based nutrition as a cornerstone. This includes an overhaul of the inpatient nutrition program, diabetes education, cafeteria offerings and even the creation of a new, unique and progressive approach to employee wellness. Marcy is also working alongside the Vice President of Medical Affairs to lead a 2 month research project involving a plant based nutrition health immersion with the system’s sickest employees. Marcy is also among the founding members of the HEALthy City Foundation; a local non-profit aimed at increasing health education, awareness and local resources related to the Food as Medicine, plant based nutrition model. Before coming to Midland Health, Marcy was a morning show anchor and reporter for the local NBC affiliate, where she was recognized and awarded for her writing and storytelling skills by the Texas Association of Broadcasters. 

Andrew M. Freeman, MD, FACC, FACP – Director, Clinical Cardiology, National Jewish Health 

Andrew M. Freeman MD, FACC, FACP joined National Jewish Health in Denver, CO after completing his training in Philadelphia at Temple University. Prior to that, he completed his internal medicine training at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He completed medical school at SUNY Buffalo with research honors after graduating summe cum laude from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. At National Jewish, he serves as the director of clinical cardiology and the director of cardiovascular prevention and wellness, and is an Associate Professor of Medicine. Dr. Freeman also hosts a monthly Walk with a Doc program (http:/Denver.WalkWithADoc.Org) in the Denver area where he volunteers his time to walk with patients on Saturday mornings to teach key health concepts, but also to explore using exercise as medicine for the greater good of the public. Finally, Dr. Freeman holds some key leadership positions in the American College of Cardiology as well as at the national level, including co-chair of the Lifestyle and Nutrition Workgroup and sits on the steering committee for the Cardiovascular Disease Prevention council and numerous other committees. At National Jewish Health he started and oversees the Ornish Intensive Cardiac Rehab. He has published scholarly manuscripts on plant-based nutrition. An avid teacher and educator, Dr. Freeman teaches medical, physician assistant and pharmacy students regularly, and has hosted many community lectures and CME programs. He is a regular feature at VegFest Colorado and continues to expand his teaching and messages of prevention and wellness all over Colorado.
