Description
2020 surfaced the cracks in our health system and the chasms of our nation’s health disparities. A conversation about health equity must include a focus on ways to prevent, treat and reverse the chronic disease that has made us even more vulnerable to a pandemic, disproportionately so for our racial and ethnic minority populations. Join these four distinguished former U.S. Surgeons General as they provide their unique perspective, including their call to action for lifestyle medicine providers.

Richard-CarmonaRichard Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS | 17th Surgeon General of the United States; Distinguished Professor, University of Arizona

Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS 17th Surgeon General of the United States Distinguished Professor, University of Arizona Dr. Carmona served as the 17th Surgeon General of the United States and is currently the Chief of Health Innovations at Canyon Ranch. His extensive leadership background in many disciplines includes medicine, law enforcement, the military, public health, higher education, emergency preparedness, and health care management. Within these fields, he has held positions ranging from sheriff and SWAT team leader to RN to trauma surgeon. He also brings a life story of disadvantaged beginnings and an inspiring self-transformation from high school dropout to combat decorated Special Forces veteran. He attended UCSF Medical School where he received the prestigious Gold Headed Cane as the top graduate. Dr. Carmona is a Distinguished Professor of Public Health, Professor of Surgery and Clinical Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Science at the University of Arizona. He serves on numerous government and private boards involving business, health and national security issues.

Joycelyn-EldersJoycelyn Elders, MD | 15th Surgeon General of the United States

In 1987, then Governor Bill Clinton named Elders director of the Arkansas Department of Health. Under her direction, 19 Arkansas schools opened health clinics. In 1989 the Arkansas State Legislature ordered the creation of a kindergarten-through-twelfth-grade curriculum including not only sex education but also instruction in hygiene, substance-abuse prevention, self-esteem, and equal sexual responsibility among both males and females. After serving as the U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Elders returned to the University of Arkansas in 1995 as a faculty researcher and professor of pediatric endocrinology at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital. In 1996 she wrote her autobiography, Joycelyn Elders, M.D.: From Sharecropper’s Daughter to Surgeon General of the United States of America. Now retired from practice, she is a professor emeritus at the University of Arkansas School of Medicine and remains active in public health education.

Antonia-NovelloAntonia Novello, MD | 14th Surgeon General of the United States

Dr. Antonia Coello Novello was born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. She graduated from the University of Puerto Rico with a B.S. and an M.D. She completed her residency/internship in pediatrics at University of Michigan, and a fellowship in pediatric nephrology at the University of Michigan and Georgetown University. Also, she received a Master’s and a Doctor of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. She holds countless awards, including over 56 honoris causa, and is member of the Alpha Omega Alpha and the National Academy of Medicine. On 1990, Dr. Antonia Novello was sworn as the 14th Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Service, and became the first woman and the first Hispanic ever to hold this position. During 9/11, Dr. Novello was the NY State Health Commissioner, and most recently she served as the Executive Director of Public Health Policy at Florida Hospital. After Hurricane María, Dr. Novello was involved in setting up community health clinics in P.R., where she distributed resources with the help of the National Guard and the US Army. She has also become a consultant for the PR National Guard in the aftermath of the earthquakes in PR and oversaw the mental health aspect of people in the tent cities. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, she has become the spokesperson and advocate for the prevention efforts regarding the COVID-19.

David-SatcherDavid Satcher, MD, PhD | 16th Surgeon General of the United States; Founding Director and Senior Advisor, SHLI, Morehouse School of Medicine

David Satcher, MD, PhD is a physician-scientist and public health administrator with an extensive track record of leadership, research, and community engagement. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Morehouse College and holds MD and PhD degrees from Case Western Reserve University, where he was also elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Dr. Satcher served as the 16th Surgeon General of the United States (1998-2002) and the 10th Assistant Secretary for Health in the Department of Health and Human Services (1998-2001). He also served as Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). Dr. Satcher has also held top leadership positions at the Charles R. Drew University for Medicine and Science, Meharry Medical College, and the Morehouse School of Medicine. He has received over 50 honorary degrees and has received numerous awards from diverse organizations and agencies. Currently, Dr. Satcher is the Founding Director and Senior Advisor for the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at the Morehouse School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia.

LM2021 OnDemand sessions are hosted online via the ACLM Learning Management System and each session consists of a title, description, learning objectives, speaker information, video recording, presentation slides in PDF format, an assessment and survey evaluation.
