Description: Part of the Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies program, this topic module contains 3 units.

    This module provides a description of the nature of stress and its long-term effects and the characteristics of mindfulness, and discusses how mindfulness practice, including mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), leads to health, personal and professional benefits. The manageable elements of stress reactions are discussed. Resources to share with patients are also identified. The program highlights the evidence base in clinical practice of Mindbody interventions and how to employ these interventions in patient care. The course also introduces mindfulness skills, the essential elements of mindfulness, including self-compassion and healing relationships, and emphasizes the benefits of empathy, attunement and resonance in the clinical encounter. 


    Learning Objectives:
    After viewing the module presentations, learners should be able to:

    Mindbody Continuum and the Clinical Role of Mindfulness

    • Identify the long-term health effects of stress
    • Describe general characteristics of mindfulness
    • Discuss health benefits of mindfulness practice, and physiological mechanisms
    • Recognize relevance for proactive self-care and behavior modification

    Mindfulness Practice: Characteristics, Benefits, and Approaches

    • Cite manageable elements of stress reactions
    • Describe characteristics of mindfulness generally, and MBSR specifically
    • Define health, personal, and professional benefits of mindfulness practice
    • Identify modalities and resources to share with patients (or use yourself)

    Clinical Applications of Mindfulness Practice

    • Cite highlights of the evidence-base in the clinical application of Mindbody interventions
    • Employ best practices for the use of Mindbody interventions in patient care
    • Apply evidence-based clinical guidelines for the use of Mindbody interventions in patient management
    • Determine appropriate resources for Mindbody management of indicated health conditions 

    Module Format: The Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies education activity is composed of a series of modules viewed in a digital format. Users are able to move through the module at their own pace. It begins and ends with an assessment of the learner's comprehension of the subject matter. Interactive scenarios, images, audio, and video may have been added to enhance the experience. 


    Duration: 1.75 hours


    Assessment and Measurement: A score of 80% or higher on the unit quizzes is required to pass the module.


    Specifications: This module can be viewed on desktop, tablet or mobile device. Speakers or headphones are required for this program. Laptop or PC preferred.


    Term of Approval: January 26, 2022 – January 26, 2025
