Description:  Part of the Lifestyle Medicine Core Competencies program, this topic module contains two units.

The first unit provides a review of the epidemiology, determinants and assessments, and evaluation for weight management in a lifestyle medicine practice. The second unit reviews the three main components of weight management within clinical practice: nutrition, physical activity, and behavior change. Increased counseling and integrated care delivery models for weight management will improve the success of weight management programs and ultimately reduce the burden of disease seen in overweight patients.

    • Interpret the complex determinants of obesity
    • Describe the practical assessment and evaluation methods for weight management in clinical practice

    Lifestyle Medicine and Obesity Medicine

    • Explain why lifestyle is first line medicine for obesity from the Look AHEAD Trial
    • Describe expected outcomes and metabolic adaptations with weight loss
    • Recognize the role of nutrition in preventing and treating excess weight
    • Review physical activity interventions in weight management
    • Identify key elements of behavior change counseling for durable implementation of weight management programs
